CCC Announces Recipients of 2024 Community Education Award Grants in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba
In 2024, Carton Council of Canada was pleased to announce the launch of the fourth year of the organization’s Community Education Award (CEA) program. The program was developed to support and enhance recycling education in Canadian communities. In 2024, the CEA program focused on Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Since 2021, the CEA program has run in Ontario, Québec and Atlantic Canada.
Ten organizations across Canada’s prairie provinces successfully completed the program and will each receive a $2,000 grant. This year’s recipients are:
- Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC)
- City of Brandon
- City of Edmonton
- Gateway Resources Inc.
- Recycle Everywhere (Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association)
- SARCAN Recycling
- Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council (SWRC)
- Strathcona County
- Thompson Recycling Centre
- Town of Okotoks
To receive the award, participating organizations had to show that their websites accurately and clearly define carton recycling. They were also asked to provide at least two other examples of communications activities conducted during the year that promote recycling in general, while also prominently featuring cartons.
Activities undertaken by the participating organizations included social media posts, videos, ads, school tours (in class and at the MRF) and even a slideshow at the local cinema.
Also, for the first time in the history of the CEA program, each organization’s submission was considered to receive either a first, second or third place award of merit. Submissions were evaluated for the awards of merit based on the following criteria: demonstrated communication improvement, utilization of the Carton Council best practices toolkit, community participation in the contest (e.g., number of likes, number of participants in an event, if applicable, etc.), and number of activities.
Based on this evaluation, the first-place winner receiving an additional $3,000 is the Town of Okotoks. The second-place winner receiving an additional $2,000 is Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) and the third-place winner receiving an additional $1,000 is SARCAN.
Congratulations and thanks to all participating organizations (special mention to SARCAN and SWRC for the creative puns!).
