CCC Promotes Use of Cartons for Moulded Fibre Packaging at Premier Industry Conference

TAPPICon, which is put on annually by the U.S.-based Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), is a huge gathering for the global packaging, paper, pulp, tissue and converting industries. The next edition in 2026 is expected to attract over 1500 attendees and 100 exhibitors.

CCC Managing Director Isabelle Faucher was one of the speakers at this year’s TAPPICon held in Minneapolis, May 4–7. She was there to talk about the potential of turning post-consumer cartons into quality moulded fibre products.

Backed by a CCC-sponsored study conducted last year by the Quebec-based Innofibre research centre, her presentation showed that moulded products made of recovered carton fibres can have properties that are similar to those made of virgin pulp and superior to those traditionally produced with old newspapers.

Isabelle also delivered the message that a growing opportunity for North American manufacturers was being defined by the convergence of EPR-driven demand for recyclers and supply of quality carton bales with the dwindling availability and attendant higher cost of traditional materials used for moulded pulp products. As Brian Taylor, Senior Editor of trade publication Recycling Today wrote in an insightful article last year, “The situation leaves the door open to alternative fibre sources,” like cartons.

As described by the CCC at TAPPICon, an opportunity is taking shape in North America for manufacturers of moulded pulp products to take a closer look at cartons. Image: CCC.
